The INDEX Archive books

2016-07-13 11.45.20 The INDEX newspaper, aka the Mitchell Index, ceased operation with their last published issue on 29 June 2016.  Due to declining revenue and increased printing costs Owner/Publisher Chabella Guzman has decide to shut down the weekly print newspaper.

According to the History of Western Nebraska by Grant Shumway,  The INDEX was started initially in Gering as the Nebraska Homestead in the fall of 1893 by William A. Hale who in turn sold it to the Wagner brothers, Harry and Frank in 1895.  They in turn sold the paper and press to George Mark in May 1896.  George sold the paper to E.F. Moon sometime between 1898 and 1900 as Mr. Mark then purchased the paper back from Mr. Moon in June 1900.  When the Burlington railroad reached the North Platte valley and passed by on the other side of the river, Mr. Mark moved his plant to Mitchell in April 1901 and changed the name to the Mitchell Index.  To the best of our knowledge it has been in continuous operation and print since that time.

The INDEX as it is known today has had a number of owners over the years and some effort will be expended to document and display here a complete list of its owners and publishers as time permits.
